Calming Camellia and Embracing Imperfection

Thanks for hopping with us today as we feature some of our favorite Sale-A-Bration items for this month’s Creative Card-iology Team Blog Hop.  Can you believe Sale-A-Bration is almost over?  There are only a few more days left to take advantage of all the freebies that come with ordering during Sale-A-Bration!

I chose the Calming Camellia stamp set to feature today as I love the sentiments, the fonts and the images in this set.  Calming Camellia is one of the Distinktive stamp sets that can create different opacities in just one stamped image.  With other stamps you’d need 2- or 3-step stamping to achieve a similar depth in the image.

I’m pretty new to using the Distinktive stamps, so I can’t tell you a lot of secrets to getting the best results.  If you’ve used them and learned some great tips, I would love to hear from you!

I decided to make a slimline card and try out the new Slim Card Dies and Slimline Envelopes along with the Calming Camellia stamps. When I saw the scalloped edge in the die collection, I knew I wanted to use that along the front of my card base and leave a border of Designer Series Paper showing when the card front is closed.   Soft Succulent cardstock and envelope and the Symbols of Fortune Specialty Designer Paper were perfect choices for my card.

My card base measured 8.5” x 7”, scored and folded to measure 8.5” x 3.5”.  I first die cut the scalloped edge on the front of my card base, and then also die cut a piece of white cardstock and patterned paper together so that they would fit tightly on the inside of my card.

I tested out my Distinktive stamp on a scrap piece of paper first, and then decided to try embossing it to see how the image turned out.  I used clear embossing powder with Soft Succulent ink.  When I use the colored ink pads instead of VersaMark ink for embossing, I try to make sure my ink pad is not too dry and have my embossing powder ready to apply as these inks dry more quickly than the VersaMark ink.

I was fairly happy with my image, so went on to stamp my flourishes, my inside sentiment and add embellishments.

I wish I could say this card went together just like I imagined it, but it didn’t.  And that’s okay!   When I stamped my flourish at the bottom of my card front, I had ink along the edge of my stamp that left an extra rim of ink.  I was able to use the 2021-2023 In Color Jewel embellishments to cover that extra ink spot, and I really like the elegance the gems add to the card front.  I also didn’t adhere the card inside where I should have so the white cardstock showed when I closed my card.  But I took the brush end of the Soft Succulent Stampin’ Write Marker and colored along the scalloped edge where the white cardstock and patterned paper met.  I also used a sponge dauber and sponged Soft Succulent ink along the scalloped edge of my card front so that the edges blend together when closed.

There were times in the process of creating this card that I wanted to stop and start over, and I could have.  And you'll find that too.  But sometimes you just have to embrace the imperfections and keep on going!

Calming Camellia is a host set available for free when you have an order or workshop that totals $300 or more.  That can seem like an impossible goal to hit especially with the end of the month approaching quickly, but it can be done and I would love to help you do it!  One way to do it would be to invite some friends to do a kit class with you, either with any of the kits in the collection or with the Paper Pumpkin Kit.  March is Paper Pumpkin’s anniversary month, and the upcoming kit is one you will love to share with friends.  We can just set up an event, have you and your guests purchase a prepaid Paper Pumpkin subscription for 1 or more months and close your event before the end of February, and then gather together virtually or in person later in March to put them together when the kits arrive!  Contact me at kimskeepsakecreations@gmail.com or comment below to get the party going!

Thanks for stopping by my blog today!  Don’t forget to check out my friends’ projects by following the links below.  We love hearing your thoughts on our projects, so leave a comment and let us know you stopped by!

  1. Very nice Kim - I'm loving these slim line cards you've been making. I really like the addition of the Rhinestones - even if they are covering up stray ink!
