Let's Talk Masking!

My post today is part of a blog hop with some of my fabulous Creative "Card-iology" teammates.  Its our first one ever, and I'm so excited to be a part of it!  After checking out my blog, you can hop on over to the other blogs for more creative inspiration!

In the middle of preparing my blog post for this hop, I was reminded that my parents will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary next week.  And that changed what I was planning to post here.  But I still wanted to share a little of how I've been using the masking technique in my card, and masks really are a hot topic these days!

I've found it somewhat difficult to carry on conversations and really connect with people wearing a mask, but in reality we often figuratively wear masks.  As I worked on my anniversary card for my parents, I thought how important it is for any lasting relationship to be intentional about caring for each other and connecting in meaningful ways.  And that requires shedding our figurative masks and being honest, kind and forgiving with each other.  That can be very hard to do, but the dimension and depth to those kinds of relationships are so worth the risk.

So what is the masking technique?  Well, as best as I can explain it as it relates to stamping, it is covering up a stamped image so that you can stamp another image over top of it.  The second image then appears to be coming out from behind the previously stamped image creating a beautiful new image with more dimension to it.

I used the Celebrate Sunflowers stamp set for my anniversary card because I just love the detail in it, and the masking technique allows my leaves to peak out from behind the sunflower.

I used Whisper White Thick Cardstock for my card base and folded it in half.  I embossed a piece of  Whisper White cardstock with the Brick & Mortar 3D Embossing Folder and adhered the layer to my card base using the new Stampin' Seal adhesive.

My sentiment was stamped onto a piece of Whisper White cardstock where I had already printed "65 years together."  I used the Just Jade marker from the 2020-2022 Stampin' Write Marker Assortment to ink up just the "Congratulations ON REACHING" portion of the sentiment and stamped it above the "65 years together."  I used the Label Me Fancy punch to punch out the sentiment and punched another piece of Just Jade cardstock using the same punch.  The Just Jade piece was then cut in half and adhered to the back of my sentiment in such a way that the Just Jade pieces framed the Whisper White sentiment on either side.  I used the long hole punch on the Label Me Fancy punch to make a hole to slide a piece of Just Jade ribbon through and tie a bow.  Stampin' Dimensionals were then added to the back of the sentiment, which was then set aside to be adhered later.

I then stamped the sunflower image in the new InColor Bumblebee ink onto a piece of Whisper White cardstock using the Stamparatus as I knew I wanted to restamp my image several times to get a nice dark impression.  I love using Classic Stampin' Spots to ink up my stamps when I use the Stamparatus as I find that I have more control over where the ink ends up and don't get ink on the edge of my stamps as much.  Since there is not currently a Bumblebee Classic Stampin' Spot available, I inked up an Uninked Stampin' Spot with the Bumblebee ink refill to then stamp my image.

The next step was creating the mask to cover up my sunflower image so that I could stamp the leaves in Just Jade ink.  I stamped the sunflower on a 4x6 sticky note, making sure to stamp on the end backed by the sticky stuff (very technical description, right?).  Then I cut the sticky note right along the edge of the stamped image.

I placed my cut out sticky note image just inside the outline of the image already stamped on Whisper White.  It was important to place it just inside the outline so that my stamped leaf images would line up right next to the sunflower.  If I had lined up the edges of my mask with those of the already stamped image, there would have been a space left between the flower and the leaf.

Once I stamped my leaves where I wanted them, I cut out the whole image and put Stampin' Dimensionals on the back and adhered it and my prepared sentiment to the embossed layer on my card base to finish my card front.

Who doesn't love sunflowers?

It pays to be careful what others in my family hear me say or see me do repeatedly during the year.  We have had a history of making Christmas a unique opportunity to highlight some of those things through gifting.  One year we all noticed my brother was never without his sunglasses, so each one of us wrapped up one or more pairs of sunglasses to give to him at our family gathering.  My mom never passed up a coin on the ground, so one year we all saved up our pennies and wrapped them up in different ways.   Which brings me to the year of the sunflowers.

One of my sisters wasn't fond of sunflowers and wasn't afraid to say so.  Now, really, who doesn't like sunflowers?  So we all decided to gift her with sunflowers in as many different forms as we could think of - if I remember rightly I gave her cheap foam sunflower placemats.

Well, the next year the joke was on us.  Each of us received our gift repurposed in some way, in a much nicer form than what was given - the sunflower placemats ended up as the padded bottom in a trinket box.  I don't remember what all my sister received or how she repurposed it, but we still laugh at how she turned the tables on us.

So when I saw the Celebrate Sunflowers stamp set, it brought back some fond memories and I knew I had to try it out.  The Celebrate Sunflowers bundle includes the stamp set and dies and is part of the larger suite of products called Flowers for Every Season.  I used one of the new In Color ink pads, Cinnamon Cider, to stamp the outline of my sunflower, the leaves and my sentiment and colored my sunflower and leaves with several colors of the Stampin' Blends alcohol markers.  I used the coordinating Sunflowers Dies to die cut  my sunflower and leaves.

My card base is Cinnamon Cider cardstock, with a matted layer of Whisper White cardstock embossed with the Brick & Mortar 3D Embossing Folder.  I stamped the sentiment "wildly grateful" (from the Lovely You stamp set) onto a piece of the new In Color Bumblebee cardstock and punched out my card front greeting with the Label Me Fancy punch.  I'm loving the new Stampin' Seal adhesive, which I used to first attach my ribbon to my embossed mat and then adhere that layer to my card base.  I used Stampin' Dimensionals and Mini Stampin' Dimensionals to adhere my sunflower and punched sentiment to the card base and create a bit of dimension to my design.  I then adhered my leaves with Mini Glue Dots.  My final touch was the addition of a couple of the Flowers for Every Season Gems using the Fine Tip Glue Pen.

The Flowers for Every Season suite of products has so many beautiful products in it.  I'm sure you're going to want to use every part of it, especially the Celebrate Sunflowers bundle.  I mean, really, who doesn't love sunflowers!

Maintaining Perspective

I will be the first to admit that it has sometimes been hard to stay positive over the last few weeks.  Every day life has changed drastically, plans I had put in place for the future have been disrupted, finances have been stretched way beyond what I had planned, loved ones and friends have gotten sick or faced tremendous losses, and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.  And so much of what is in the news or on social media can be very disheartening.  It's so easy to lose perspective.

As I was thinking about how the words I write or speak have an influence on others - positive or negative, I remembered a session from a leadership conference I attended last summer, the Global Leadership Summit.  The speaker, Ben Sherwood (former Co-Chairman, Disney Media Networks; former President, Disney ABC Television; and a best-selling author), spoke on how to lead during times of rapid change and disruption.

Here are a few of the thoughts I jotted down as he spoke about leading others to safety in crisis situations that have been helping me as I think about how what I say or do influences those around me:

1.  Maintain point of reference - where am I and where am I trying to go - There are so many people speaking right now and often what I hear is conflicting information that it is so easy to get distracted and discouraged.
2.  Wait for violent and sudden motion to stop - things will settle and I can take action - It's important to be patient and get a clear view of things before making decisions.
3.  Practice realistic optimism - those who emerge as leaders in a crisis situation keep an unflinching sense of their surroundings, maintain optimism about the future, and retain hope and faith.  Those who have faith in God have a powerful tool for survival.  - This one brings me right back to number 1 as God is my point of reference.  "I lift up my eyes to the hills.  From where does my help come?  My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth."  Psalm 121:1-2

One of the things that has been very helpful to me to keep perspective on God and the hope I have in Him is to focus on all I have to be thankful for.  I've been keeping a gratitude journal, and I try to write down at least 3 things each day that I am grateful for.  One of the entries in it recently was that I was able to get my hair cut just a couple of days before all of the hair salons were ordered to close.  I'd be ready to pull my hair out right now if I hadn't gotten it cut then!

The early released Ornate Garden Suite products are so suited to the theme of gratitude.  I used products from this suite for to make this Thank You card.  The Specialty Designer Series Paper (DSP) from this suite has a beautiful springtime floral them, with one side having beautiful foiled designs.  I cut one sheet that was white with gold foil to 4"x6" and used the soon-to-be retired 2018-2020 In Color Stampin' Write Markers to color in the flowers.

Once I had my piece of paper all colored in, I used two dies from the Ornate Layer Dies to cut a frame from my paper.  I then cut a piece of Whisper White cardstock to about 5.25"x 3, and I used one of the dies from the Ornate Border collection of dies to make a beautiful scalloped edge.  I stamped the THANK YOU sentiment from the Ornate Thanks stamp set onto the center of my Whisper White piece and then adhered my colored frame around the stamped image.

I adhered the Whisper White cardstock to a cardstock base of Blueberry Bushel, one of the 2018-2020 colors that will be retiring soon, and place some pearl embellishments in the bottom right corner using my Take Your Pick tool.

I participated in a tutorial project with a number of demonstrators around the world and had such a great time collaborating with them.  Together we created 90 project tutorials using the Ornate Garden Suite, and I am privileged to be able to offer a bundle of all the tutorials to you, free with a $50 purchase at my online store here my store or you can purchase it here for $21.  If you purchase the complete Ornate Garden Suite of products, you'll also receive a kit of coordinating products and tutorials to make 4 more cards using this of coordinating products and tutorials for 4 more cards using this suite.  When you place an order through my website here my store, use the April Host Code VHRQVRFQ.

Sharing in Sorrow

I'm a bit sad today.  My friend Susan's husband, John, passed away yesterday.  I've known Susan for going on almost two years now from a church ministry group, but only met her husband a couple months ago when I had the opportunity to eat dinner with them.  I enjoyed my time getting to know both of them in a different setting, especially now with social distancing and quarantine regulations in place.

While I can't give a hug in person, I still have the option of supporting and encouraging my friend by sending a card.  Susan is an avid gardener and loves flowers, so I decided to use the Flowering Floral Specialty Designer Series paper, available as a Free with $50 Sale-A-Bration item through the end of today, for my card.

I used soon-to-be retired colors, Lovely Lipstick and Pineapple Punch, from the 2018-2020 cardstock and In Color Stampin' Write Markers collections to make my card.  I cut a strip of the Flowering Floral DSP and colored the flowers using the fine tip end of the Lovely Lipstick marker and the brush end of the Pineapple Punch Marker.

I adhered the colored DSP to another strip 1/4" wider than the floral piece.  I made 3 cards, the first of which was simply stamped with a sympathy sentiment from the Peaceful Moments stamp set.  I punched out the sentiment for the second card, popped it up with Stampin' Dimensionals, and added ribbon and also Gilded Gem embellishments from the Ornate Garden Suite, which will be released tomorrow.  And on the 3rd card I used a border die from the Ornate Border Dies (also from the Ornate Garden Suite) and added a scalloped die cut circle behind my punched sentiment.

There's still a few more hours to take advantage of all that Sale-A-Bration offers - Free items with $50 or more purchases, a special host stamp set, and the very special Join offer, which includes a free stamp set of your choice, a sample pack of papers from the current Mini Catalog and the Mini Trimmer, beyond the normal $125 of product for only $99 plus tax.

The Ornate Garden Suite releases to customers tomorrow, and it is a beautiful suite of products!  I participated with a group of demonstrators around the world to create a bundle of tutorials featuring this suite of products - 90 tutorials in the bundle!  You'll be hearing more from me about how you can purchase this bundle of tutorials or get it free!

Here is a list of products used in the creation of my cards.  If you'd like to check them out further or find out more about the Join offer that ends tonight, visit my online store here:My store

Even though there is much sadness and sorrow right now, I also have hope because of the relationship I have with God.  He has revealed himself in His Word, and it says in Psalm 34:18 "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in Spirit," and in Psalm 119:50 "This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life."  I am so glad that in the swiftly changing and often sorrowful events happening right now, that I can cling to God's promises and the hope I have in Him.

My Snow Globe Obsession

I am posting today as part of Kylie Bertucci's International Blog Highlights.  There are 2 parts:

2.  The 10 artists who receive the most votes will be participating in a Blog Hop at the end of this month.  With your help by voting for me, I may just get a chance to participate!

Thank you for your support!

My mom loves and collects snow globes.  So when I saw the Still Scenes bundle and Snow Globe Shaker Domes in the Stampin' Up! 2019 Holiday Catalog, I decided I had to buy them to create at least one card to show my mom.  That decision has developed into a snow globe card obsession!  I am now looking at my stamp sets and all card occasions with new eyes to see if I can fit them behind the Snow Globe Shaker Domes.

At first I stayed with the winter theme, and my very first shaker card created with my mom in mind is pictured below.  I used the Feels Like Frost Specialty Designer Series Paper and the Nature's Beauty stamp set to create this card.

But then I got to thinking, "What if snow globes aren't just for snow scenes?"  Since I was in the midst of preparing for my World Card Making Day event and also starting on a personal 31 day journey focusing on gratitude, I decided to create an autumn scene shaker card with the snow globe domes.

My inspiration for my background came from a photo my sister took recently on a beautiful autumn evening where the sky looked like it was on fire.  I decided to try to recreate some of this beautiful scene with the pigment sprinkles in the 2019-2020 Annual Catalog. You can find some Facebook lives I did over a couple of days last week (October 1 and 2nd) at my Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/pg/kimskeepsakecreations, that show some of the process as well as some simple stamping action.

I spritzed a piece of watercolor paper with just a few sprays of water, and then carefully sprinkled Melon Mambo, Mango Melody and Daffodil Delight sprinkles on my damp paper.  Then I watched the magic work by spritzing my paper again with water.  The ink sprinkles spread and started to create my autumn sky.  Once I was happy with the way the ink was spreading, I blotted the wet ink with a paper towel and let my scenes dry.  I created two of these autumn sky scenes.

Using the Gather Together stamp set and Early Espresso ink, I stamped my "Season of Thanks" sentiment on one scene and pumpkins and wheat on the other.  I cut out the stamped pumpkins with the Gathered Leaves dies. I added a bit of color to the pumpkins using the Cajun Craze Stampin' Blends Combo, and then got busy creating my card base!

I wanted my card to be able to stand up and support the weight of the shaker dome, so I looked for an easel or other kind of fold that might work for my card.  I found several different versions of a folded card base called an Upright Z-Fold that I thought would work, and when I saw Pinterest post by Connie Babbert of INKspired Treasures, I was pretty sure I had found the right one.  I loved her card design as it had a flip up card where I could include a sentiment and personal message, as well as the fold I wanted.

I cut a sheet of Early Espresso cardstock measuring 4.25" x 11" and scored and folded it in the z shape at 5.5" and 2.75".  I cut another piece from my sheet of the Early Espresso cardstock measuring 3.5" x 9" and scored and folded that piece at 4.5" to make my flip-up base for my globe.  I cut 2 pieces of Cajun Craze cardstock measuring 4" x 5.25" and 4" x 2.5" for my z-fold base, and third piece measuring 3.25" 4.25" to mat onto my flip-up card base.

From the Come to Gather Designer Series Paper collection, I cut 2 pieces measuring 3.75" x 5" and 3.75" x 2.25" and adhered these onto the corresponding Cajun Craze z-fold base pieces.  I matted the Cajun Craze pieces onto the card base.  The third piece of Cajun Craze I ran through my Big Shot with the Subtle embossing Folder.  Using the Layering Circle dies, I cut and matted 3 sizes of circles as shown in the picture below.

I cut out the window for my snow globe to peek through from the textured piece of Cajun Craze using the die from the Snow Globe Scenes dies collection.  I removed the tape from the front of the snow globe and adhered it to my textured piece.  Then I positioned my cut out pumpkins under my "Season of Thanks" sentiment with Stampin' Dimensionals.  I poured some beads into the back of my globe dome and carefully adhered the watercolor scene to the back of my textured piece.  A base for the snow globe was cut using the Snow Globe Scenes dies, which I adhered below my snow globe with the Fine Tip Glue pen. I then adhered my flip-up card to my base.

I finished off my card by punching some leaves from my textured Cajun Craze snow globe cut out and Early Espresso scraps and using Mini Dimensionals adhered them to the matted circles.  Putting the double-sided tape just at the bottom of my matted circles, I adhered these circles to the bottom fold of my z-fold card base.  My flip-up card can now rest behind these circles.

You can find products used in this project listed below.  If it's something you'd like to try and find you need supplies, please use the link to the right of this blog to check out my online store.

I briefly mentioned my personal focus on gratitude this month, and I just want to take a minute to share that with you.  I am try to start each day by writing down in my journal up to 3 things that I am thankful for that day.  I am finding that it helps me keep my perspective as I intentionally think about and write down how much I have to be grateful for.  I encourage you to try it yourself, and I would love to hear about it if you decide to try it.

I also mentioned that this has become an obsession, and here are a couple other snow globe projects I've created using current and retired Stampin' Up! products:

What scenes can you imagine behind the snow globe dome?

I hope you enjoyed reading about this project.  I hope you'll take some time to check out all of the cards in the gallery and be sure to vote for your 5 top favorites!  I hope mine is one of them!

The Power of a Smile

What makes you smile?

I keep a certain mouse pad on my desk at work that makes me smile every time I look at it.  Sometimes when I'm having a frustrating moment, I pull out this pad just to experience the power of a smile.

I have found that a smile, either my own smile or someone else's smaile can boost my spirits, change my perspective, and can connect me with others.  I experienced this when I went to China and taught English for a couple of weeks to Chinese teenagers.  Before I went I was very nervous about how I would communicate with the teens as I didn't know the language and was very unfamiliar with the culture.  A friend who had recently returned from several years of teaching English in China assured me that I would have no problem.  She told me to just smile and my students and I would connect just fine.  The teens in my class all wrote short notes in a book for me before I left, and I think that almost all of my 13 students mentioned something about my smile.

I love the Daisy Lane stamp set in the new 2019-2020 catalog, and one of the reasons is the "Smile" sentiment.  I used the stamp set with the Daisy, the Medium Daisy and the Pretty Label punches to create the card I'm sharing today.  My cardstock base of Terracotta Tile was paired with Sahara Sand and one of the patterned papers from the Woven Threads Designer Series Paper.  The card is accented with the Terracotta Tile Scalloped Linen Ribbon and a couple of 2019-2021 In Color Faceted Dots.

I started by trimming my cardstock base to 8.5" x 5.5" and then adhering a 4" x 5.25" mat of the patterned Designer Series Paper.  My next step was to cut a piece of Sahara Sand cardstock to 3.25 x 4.25".  I added a bit of texture to the Sahara Sand piece by embossing it with the Subtle 3D embossing folder.  I added a length of the Scalloped Linen ribbon cut just a bit longer than the width of my embossed piece and adhered this piece to my card front.

My next step was to stamp two of the large daisies and 2 of the smaller daisies from the Daisy Lane stamp set onto a piece of Sahara Sand cardstock with the Terracotta Tile ink pad, and then punched out the stamped daisies.  I also stamped my "Smile" sentiment on Sahara Sand cardstock and punched it out with the Pretty Label punch.  Using a Sponge Dauber, I inked the edge of the punched sentiment with the Terracotta Tile ink.

A mini glue dot was used to adhere one of the larger and one of the smaller daisies to the other daisy of the same size, offsetting the leaves of the top daisy from the one below it.
Stampin' Dimensionals and Mini Dimensionals were used to adhere the daisies and the stamped sentiment to the embossed Sahara Sand mat.  I finished my card by accenting the sentiment with 2 of the coordinating Faceted Dots.

I hope you enjoyed reading about this project and experience the power of a smile today!

Celebrating Mom

Tomorrow is Mother's Day, and I need to take a few moments and tell you about my Mom.  She will be 84 years young in September this year and she is amazing!  She loves to mow and take care of her yard.  It has been said that walking on her lawn barefoot is like walking on velvet.  One of her favorite activities is bowling, and for several years she has participated on a bowling league.  Her team placed first in the league this season!  Don't you just love her smile?!!

A 12x12 sheet of Very Vanilla cardstock and 2 patterns from the Tea Room Designer Series Paper pack form the background for this page.  A length of Calypso Coral 3/8" Satin Ribbon separates the 2 patterns.  The rose and sentiment from the Tea Together stamp set are stamped in Rich Razzleberry ink, and the rose was then colored with Calypso Coral and Old Olive Blends. I used the Large Letter Framelits to cut out the letters to spell "MOM" and then embossed the letters with the Country Floral Embossing Folder.  The rose was die cut with the Tea Time Framelits and the sentiment and mats with the Layering Squares Framelits.  The word "Celebrate" was die cut with the Celebrate You Thinlits.  One of the things I like to do to finish everything off is to brush the edges of all the pieces with ink, and I used Rich Razzleberry and Calypso Coral inks to do this.

I hope you enjoyed meeting my mom!
